Chest Width vs Body Width on a Size Chart

The most common sizing mistake is comparing a flat garment width with a full body circumference. They are different measurements.

Read the chart heading

Look for whether measurements refer to the finished garment or the wearer's body. A flat chest width of 22 inches is not the same thing as a 22-inch body circumference.

Match the measurement method

For garment width, lay a reference tee flat and measure straight from armpit to armpit. For body circumference, wrap a flexible tape around the fullest part of the chest without compressing it.

Allow for ease

A garment usually needs room beyond the body measurement, but the intended amount depends on its pattern and fabric. Stretchy and structured materials behave differently.

Common questions

Is chest width half the chest circumference?

For a flat, symmetrical garment it may be approximately half the garment circumference, but seam shape and measurement conventions can vary.

What does body width mean on a T-shirt chart?

It commonly means the flat width across the shirt, often measured near the armpits. Confirm the chart diagram.

Should I compare a garment chart with my body?

A garment-to-garment comparison is usually more direct. Use body measurements only when the chart is designed for them.
