Use the actual hoodie
Hoodies vary in fleece weight, sleeve volume and hood size. Wear the one you plan to layer, then measure a compatible jacket rather than estimating from a T-shirt fit.
Check movement points
Reach forward and bend the elbows. The jacket should allow movement without severe pulling across the upper back or compressing the hoodie sleeves inside the armholes.
Manage the neckline
Arrange the hood so it sits cleanly outside the denim collar. A bulky hood can crowd a narrow collar, so inspect both pieces together from the side and back.
Size up only with evidence
Compare the jacket chart with your reference garment. A larger size may add needed ease, but can also lengthen sleeves and drop the shoulders.
Common questions
Should I size up a denim jacket for a hoodie?
Only if the larger measurements are needed for the layered chest, shoulders and sleeves.
What hoodie works best under denim?
A hoodie whose body and sleeves fit comfortably inside the jacket without restricting motion.
Can I use my body chest measurement?
A garment layered over another garment is often easier to compare with an existing layered jacket measured flat.
